#97 – Bessie Smith (1894–1937). American blues singer. Nicknamed The Empress of the Blues. Recordings include: Downhearted Blues (1923), St. Louis Blues (1925) and Empty Bed Blues (1928).

Working with her nickname ‘The Empress of the Blues’, The ‘E’ reminded me of a crown and by placing the type up the middle also a sceptre.
